Stay vigilant: Don't let the warmer weather fool you

We feel it, too. The sun and warmth call our name, the birds are starting to get loud, and suddenly, every empty patch of soil in the backyard looks like an empty palette. It’s tempting to grab a trowel and go to town, but if yesterday's snow was any sign, Colorado isn't done messing with us yet.

Mark Your Calendars: May 7th

This year the predicted last frost date is for Fort Collins is May 7th. Predicted being the key word so keep an eye on the overnight lows to make sure we don't have a freeze sneaking up on us as we get closer.

Until we're confident that we're in the clear of a freeze, the safest bet is to keep our frost-fragile babies inside. That said there's still plenty to plant and prep right now.

  • The "Tough Cookies" (Plant these now!): Plants like peas, kale, spinach, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, and pansies can usually handle a light kiss of frost without throwing a tantrum.

  • The "Sun-Seekers" (Wait until May 7th!): Plants like tomatoes, peppers, basil, cucumbers, and zinnias are tropical at heart. Putting them out too early can stunt their growth or kill them outright if a surprise frost hits.

Pro Tip: If you've already jumped the gun and a frost warning pops up, keep some old bedsheets or frost cloth handy to tuck your plants in overnight. Just remember to uncover them once the sun comes up!
