Who we are
Phil and Kelli are lifelong learners and have been part of the Fort Collins community since 2009.
Crawford's Cottage was born from our shared love of exploring and growing our passions in innovative ways.
We find opportunities to garden, woodwork, and sew in a small space, on a budget, and with limited time.
Reducing Environmental Impacts
Peat Moss
Harvesting peat moss destroys fragile peat bog ecosystems, which take thousands of years to form and serve as crucial carbon sinks, helping to combat climate change. Additionally, peat extraction releases stored carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
Instead, we use coconut coir as a primary ingredient in our custom plant soil.
Perlite
Production of perlite requires high-energy processing, contributing to carbon emissions, and the fine dust it creates can pose respiratory risks to gardeners. Additionally, perlite is a non-renewable resource, and its mining disrupts natural landscapes.
A sustainable substitute that works well for us is rice hulls. This biodegradable byproduct of rice production provides important aeration of our soil and organic matter as it decomposes.
Heirloom & Open-Pollenated
Most of our garden plant starts are grown from heirloom or open-pollinated seeds.
Unlike hybrid or genetically modified seeds, these varieties can be saved and replanted year after year, preserving their unique traits and adapting to local growing conditions over time. Heirlooms often boast superior flavor, diverse colors, and rich histories, making them a favorite among home gardeners and chefs alike.
